1) From what I've seen in our garden, most of the plants are dead or haven't grown. It is mostly filled with weeds and grass. It isn't adding much biomass at all. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration is often slowed when the temperature is cold. Photosynthesis is a process in which the plant takes in water, sunlight, etc to produce food/sugars for itself to gain biomass. Cellular respiration is the process that takes in sugars and nutrients to create ATP or energy. This process uses sugar and oxygen as well as sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Currently, its winter and the temperature is much colder. Sunlight isn't as abundant and the soil is dryer. We haven't received much rain either. The  plant participated in the water cycle through transpiration.  In the biosphere, land plants absorb water through their roots and then transport this through their transport system to stems and leaves. This water is needed in  photosynthesis , which is the food production process for plants. Transpiration (evaporation of water from the surface of the leaf) then returns water back to the atmosphere and the cycle repeats itself. plants convert a tmospheric carbon dioxide to carbon-based compounds through  photosynthesis .  My pl ant participated in the water cycle through photosynthesis which is where plants combine carbon dioxide with water.  During this process, plants  cleave  the carbon from the two oxygen molecules and release the oxygen back into the surrounding  environment.  Plants are primarily responsible for the presence of atmospheric oxygen.   I n the nitrogen cy...

            Blog Post #4 Abiotic factors  are non-living elements found within an ecosystem. There are six  abiotic factors  that  affect plant growth : air, water, space, temperature, light and soil (nutrients). These are the basic requirements that  plants  need to grow.  Some abiotic factors that affect my plant are soil, sunlight, and water. The soil is important because of the fact that it provides nutrients for my plant. Sunlight also provides nutrients. So my plant gets its nutrients from the sun and the soil.   Biotic factors are the non-living factors that affect organisms. Biotic factors include the a vailability of food.      I remember the first time we chose our growing spots. Our spot was filled with some dried out dirt, hay, and some small sticks. Now, its flourishing with our small plants and thriving grass.     The past week or so, we have also received a good amount of rainfall. Resulting in more growth.  I noticed that the seeds have sprouted but it is surrounded by grass/weeds.      Our plant is a part of the water cycle. As water evaporates form water sources everywhere, it goes up into the atmosphere. Then, it condensates and precipitates down onto the plant. With the water, the plant is able to do photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process where plants use energy from the sun to synthesize carbon dioxide and water. This process is how plants make their food. With photosynthesis, water plays a  major role. 1) Some abiotic factors that our plant depends on includes water, soil, sunlight, etc. The abiotic factors include us, worms, etc. 2) Our plant are engaged in competition because it is surrounded by a bunch of plants that are the same species and seeking the same resources. 3) The winners are determined on which plant thrives or grows more than the rest. Vice versa for losers. It is not always clear on who is the winner or loser in certain situations. Determining whether who is the winner or loser may be complicated because the interactions between the two won't always be parasitism or competition. Both organisms can benefit or not be affected by it. 4) The plant also interacts with many abiotic factors in which it benefits from. For instance, soil, water, sunlight,etc. Our plant interacts with these factors to grow and thrive. 1) Some abiotic factors that our plant depends on are soil, water, sunlight, minerals etc. The biotic factors are humans, worms, bugs etc. 2) our plant is engaged in competition because its competing for space and nutrients in the soil with all the other plants. 3) winners are determined by which plant is the healthiest out of all the plants. the determination is difficult because there are many factors that go into the plant's health such as nutrients, size, biomass etc. 4) other interactions the plant is engaged in could be parasitism because maybe another organism could be feeding off of the plant and thus harming it. 5) it seems that there is secondary succession in the garden because there have already been other series of changes done to the garden before the plants were planted and started growing.
     Should access to healthy food be a right for everyone? Absolutely! Everyone deserves to have a healthy lifestyle, but organic and wholesome food is not within everyones reach. Many people cannot afford to buy healthy foods such as organic vegetables, free range meats, and foods made with whole grains. There are people who can only afford to buy cheaper, processed foods.      Eating processed foods and foods loaded with sugar can lead to poor health and cause dental issues which ends up being more costly than buying good food. The health issues can lead to illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Everyone was put on this Earth to live happy and healthy. But people who consume unhealthy foods are being prevented from living this lifestyle. People who eat organic foods and vegetables are more likely to live longer.      Schools do a good job of educating children about the food groups and how to have a healthy lifestyl...

The Story of the Seed

           Throughout this year-long lab, we will use the Brassica oleracea species to experiment and observe the growth and development of the plant. We will use the White Vienna Kohlrabi seeds.The seeds will be germinated and nurtured. It will experience outdoor variables, such as differing weather, animals, etc. We then will record data on our plants grown throughout the year.

Should Companies Be Able to Own the DNA of Plants?

      No, companies shouldn't be able to own the DNA of plants.If companies are able to own the DNA of plants, it gives them way too much control. We (government/nation) will lose grasp on the food system. That is extremely dangerous because eventually, we will lose the ability to change the problem within the nations food system. On the other hand, the government does allow modified/engineered seed DNA to be patented. It does make sense to allow the modifier to have their product patented. If someone spent a lot of time/money to modify a seed and it is definitely  different. Then they should credited by their work. But it is extremely dangerous to allow any products of nature to be modified to be owned. All in all, companies shouldn't be able/allowed to own the DNA of plants seeds.
My name is Christian Reyes. I am originally from San Jose, California but I moved to mexico in 2012 and lived there for 5 years with my family. My grandparents are from mexico and we lived 10 mins away from them. Although I have never gardened in my life, I do have an understanding and an idea of how growing plants works since I already took biology class when I went to school in mexico during 7th grade. I also have a bit of experience when it comes to making food from scratch since my grandma made corn tortillas from scratch and sold them. Making the tortillas from scratch meant starting with the corn kernels and boiling them in a giant pot until they were soft enough to be ground in a huge machine that turned the boiled corn into dough which could later be shaped into a tortilla shape and then she would cook the tortilla dough on a regular stove and the final product would be a natural and fresh tortilla.
     My name is Emily Bacher. I have lived in California my whole life. I was born in Los Gatos and then I moved to San Jose when I was four years old.      The only times I remember gardening was when I was in elementary school. I remember when my teachers use to take my class to our school garden and we would plant food, watch it grow, and then eat it when it's fully ripe. It was really fun learning about different plants and vegetables. The first thing I remember planting was tomatoes. At first it was just a seed. Then once it grew, it became green. I asked my teacher why it was green instead of red. She said, " If the tomato is green that means it's not ripe yet.". When I was in fifth grade my friend, Katie, and I had a job to plant corn. It took a really long time.         My name is Haley Hoang. I have lived in San Jose, California for all of my life. I have family all over California, Canada, and Vietnam.         Most of my family definitely has a passion when it comes to gardening/tending. Whether it’s flowers, fruits, vegetables, bonsais, etc. So I gardened a decent amount growing up. I remember growing a pumpkin when I was 10 and feeling so proud of myself. My family all in all have really good gardening skills but if I had to choose, I would choose my dad. He loves to tend to his garden and especially his bonsais. My dad has put in so much time and effort to make our backyard look spectacular. Our garden grows lemons, pears, cherries, peaches, grapes, apples, nectarines, tomatoes, mint, etc. I hope to grow something good from this project.
